School helps children at risk (PBIS)

We promote appropriate behaviour and psychological resilience in children at risk. Through PBIS, we develop safe school environments that help students and teachers. This is the third year we have implemented PBIS in three pilot elementary schools. At a systemic level, we are integrating PBIS principles into the training of future and current teachers. In addition, as part of the project, we hold professional development events for the general public.

About the project

We educate professionals as well as parents
  • We provide training for workers involved in social services, health care, education and police, focused on early identification of children at risk.
  • We regularly organize case seminars for professionals, workshops for transferring know-how to professionals working with children.
  • We are currently planning a course for the development of parental competences and much more.
Introducing PBIS to pilot elementary schools
  • We have adapted the system for the Czech environment
  • We have selected schools from different locations and with different burdens of challenging behaviour
  • We have assembled implementation teams
  • Leading American experts have visited each of the pilot schools

The project is supported by the Committee of Good Will - the Olga Havel Foundation from the Active Citizens Fund. The programme promotes citizens’ active participation in the society and decision making and builds capacities of civil society organizations. It promotes respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and the respect for human rights, including the rights of those belonging to minority groups. Active Citizens Fund came to the Czech Republic in September 2019 with the goal to support CSOs regardless of their size and experience. It is operated by the Open Society Fund Prague, Committee of Good Will - the Olga Havel Foundation and Scout Institute. The Active Citizens Fund is financed from EEA and Norway Grants 2014–2021. With EEA Grants, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway contribute towards a reduction in economic and social disparity and the strengthening of mutual cooperation in Europe. One of the important objectives of the programme is strengthening bilateral cooperation between donor and beneficiary states through financial contributions in specified priority sectors. It supports bilateral relations between the donor states Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein and the Czech Republic.

What is PBIS
  • PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) is a proactive approach by schools to create a welcoming atmosphere and safe environment in schools
  • A core principle of PBIS is the reinforcement of school-wide, positively articulated behavioral norms
  • PBIS is currently being used by more than 25,000 schools in the U.S. and is gradually being implemented in many other countries
